Construction work on a dedicated cycle and pedestrian bridge connecting the Volpelleres and Sant Joan neighbourhoods in Sant Cugat has officially started, though initial tasks remain preliminary. The project, which spans the AP-7 motorway, is being managed by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) at the request of the local council. The bridge will be 193 metres long, with a 2.2-metre-wide cycle lane and a 1.8-metre-wide footpath. It forms part of a wider plan to improve active mobility, including new cycle path extensions of 220 metres in Volpelleres and 315 metres in Sant Joan.

Delays acknowledged, completion expected in 2027

Carles Brugarolas, president of the Volpelleres neighbourhood council, confirmed the works are underway and said more visible progress will follow in the coming weeks. He acknowledged administrative delays, noting that procurement processes had slowed the timeline. Originally scheduled to start in July, the project was postponed to 1 September due to fire risk restrictions that prevented necessary vegetation clearing. Brugarolas stated the current estimate is for ten months of construction, meaning the bridge should be completed and operational during 2027.

"The works have already started. In a few weeks, you'll see more movement,"

Brugarolas said, addressing residents' concerns about the pace.

€4.3 million project funded by AMB

The €4.3 million project is being delivered by a joint venture (UTE) formed by Copisa and Viasfalt. The bridge design includes distinctive entry and exit ramps to accommodate the adjacent road infrastructure, which Brugarolas described as giving it a "peculiar shape". The initiative was supported through the local Participatory Budgeting process, with final approval and funding managed by the AMB. Residents can follow updates via the Decidim Sant Cugat platform and official council communications.
