A Historic Concert for Peralada's 40th Anniversary
The Festival de Peralada marked its 40th anniversary with a landmark concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana on 29 August 2026. The Bayreuth Festival Orchestra made its first-ever appearance at the Barcelona venue as part of a tour commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival, performing a selection from Richard Wagner’s *The Ring of the Nibelung*. Pablo Heras-Casado conducted the orchestra, joined by soprano Catherine Foster, tenor Klaus Florian Vogt and bass-baritone Nicholas Brownlee. The performance included iconic excerpts such as the 'Entrance of the Gods to Valhalla', Wotan’s Farewell from *Die Walküre* and the Funeral March from *Götterdämmerung*.
A Milestone in Catalan Musical History
This concert was a historic moment for both institutions. The Bayreuth Festival Orchestra has previously visited Barcelona only twice, once in 1955 and again in 2012, both times performing at the Liceu. Its debut at the Palau de la Música Catalana, a UNESCO World Heritage site, underscored the significance of the occasion. Oriol Aguilà, director of the Festival de Peralada, highlighted the deep historical ties between the Wagner family and Catalonia, describing the collaboration as 'exceptional'. The event was jointly organised by the Fundació Orfeó Català-Palau de la Música and the Festival Castell de Peralada.
This concert is a date for the history that will enlighten the World Heritage Site by UNESCO with another monument, in this case, a musical one.
The concert also served as the opening event of the orchestra’s Spanish tour, which continued to Santander, Seville, Madrid and Valencia in early September 2026.
Wagner’s Legacy in Catalonia
The programme highlighted Wagner’s enduring influence, culminating in Brünnhilde’s final call to return the Ring to the Rhine, symbolising the restoration of balance in nature. The performance concluded beneath the sculptural group by Dídac Masana, Majó i Pau Gargallo, which crowns the Palau’s stage and depicts the Valkyries, a fitting visual echo of the music. Tickets for the concert ranged from €35 to €235, with a refund service available up to 24 hours before the event for an additional 10% fee.
