Gerardo Cavero, Barcelona's special anti-drug prosecutor, called for tougher laws against cannabis possession and trafficking during a visit to Regió7's newsroom yesterday. Cavero expressed concern about the increase in cannabis use, particularly among young people, across Central Catalonia and the wider region.
Cavero, who has held his position since 2000, criticised the slow pace of justice in prosecuting drug traffickers. He highlighted the visible presence of cannabis use, stating, "It cannot be that Passeig de Gràcia smells of joints," referring to the many points of sale and consumption on public streets.
According to Cavero, current penalties for cannabis possession and consumption are "too lenient." He believes this does not deter users or traffickers. He added that stronger legislation and better coordination between security forces and the justice system are needed to tackle the issue.
Prevention and Education
Cavero also stressed the importance of prevention and education to make young people aware of the risks associated with drug use. He concluded, "We must work together, from schools, families, and institutions, to offer alternatives to young people and prevent them from falling into the world of drugs."
His comments come as debates continue in Catalonia regarding the regulation and social impact of cannabis.
