Barcelona City Council plans to spend €1.2 million redesigning Plaça del Poeta Boscà in Barceloneta, the 4,300-square-metre square that includes the neighbourhood market. The tender process for the works is expected to begin in September.

For Barceloneta residents and families using the square, the project proposes a larger, accessible children’s play area, water-play features and shaded spaces. It also includes replacing street furniture and renewing a significant part of the square’s paving and the surface of the underground car park.

“We are recovering from many years of underinvestment in a closely knit neighbourhood, where residents have long called for quality spaces and services.”Jaume Collboni, Mayor of Barcelona, as reported by Betevé

Neighbourhood plan includes Pepe Rubianes street scheme

The square project forms part of a €46 million Barceloneta transformation plan presented in 2024. Betevé reported that 70% of the programme had been completed.

  • €17.8 million is allocated to public space.
  • €21.5 million is allocated to facilities.
  • €6.8 million is allocated to the refurbishment of public housing.

The City Council is also tendering a €5 million redesign of Carrer de Pepe Rubianes through the Pla de barris neighbourhood programme. The scheme is intended to take account of residents’ contributions gathered during participation processes in recent years.

Health, nursery and housing projects

The plan includes a future 3,000-square-metre CAP Barceloneta, a primary healthcare centre, at Passeig de Joan de Borbó, 44, on the site of the former Clínica Barceloneta.

Escola Bressol Municipal la Mar, a municipal nursery, is due to open in September after a €1.1 million expansion that increases capacity from 63 to 100 places. The council has also refurbished 18 municipal flats at Passeig de Joan de Borbó, 44, with 13 allocated, while work is under way on 81 homes for older people on Carrer de Pinzón.

Residents seeking updates on the square scheme can monitor the City Council’s forthcoming September tender process.
