Pre-registration for new pupils at Barcelona's municipal nursery schools (EBM) and public nurseries begins on Monday, 4 May. The city is offering 4,831 places for new children, with the total capacity of the EBM network set to grow to 8,993 places for infants aged four months to three years.
The pre-registration period starts simultaneously at all 106 municipal nursery schools and the five public nurseries run by the Generalitat in Barcelona. Applications must be submitted online via the City Council's Virtual Procedures Office. Families unable to complete the online application can contact their first-choice school by phone or email to arrange an in-person appointment between 4 May and 15 May.
Expanding Nursery Capacity
The upcoming academic year will see an increase in the total capacity of Barcelona's municipal nursery network. A new school, EBM Tramuntana, is being built in the former Sant Andreu barracks at Passatge de Marta Mata, 8. This new facility will add 104 places across seven class groups.
Additionally, EBM La Mar, located in the Barceloneta neighbourhood at Carrer d'Andrea Dòria, 40, will expand its capacity. Following ongoing renovation work, the school will increase its places from 63 to 100 for the next academic year. EBM Germanetes, situated at Carrer Comte de Borrell, 159, in the Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample neighbourhood, will continue to offer diversified or reduced hours.
Support for Special Educational Needs
Of the places available for new pupils, 538 have been reserved to address special educational needs. This includes children with physical, intellectual, or sensory disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, severe behavioural or mental disorders, or serious degenerative and rare diseases. Places are also reserved for children with needs arising from severe social risk situations.
This expansion and reservation of places aim to meet the growing demand for early childhood education in Barcelona. The City Council expects a smooth pre-registration process, with the new school and expanded facilities ready for the start of the academic year.
