Barcelona Nord bus station in Barcelona has completed a €14 million renovation, with the city council saying the work is designed to improve passenger flow, security and comfort at the capital’s main coach hub.

The station now handles more than 3 million passengers a year, and the council said coach travel has risen by nearly 50% since 2019. It expects demand to keep growing, with a further 30% increase forecast by 2030.

The project included €4.8 million from European Next Generation funds, through the Barcelona Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan. Services have been consolidated onto a single 1,500 m² floor, with one passenger entrance on Carrer Nàpols to make access simpler and movement inside the station more orderly.

Barcelona mayor Jaume Collboni said the upgrade improves the user experience and strengthens a key piece of city infrastructure that has had to adapt to rising demand. The council also said around 7,000 intercity buses enter and leave Barcelona each day, and that it is working on improvements to about 20 intercity bus stops across the city, including Sants and Fabra i Puig. The station now has a new cafeteria, updated vending services, renovated waiting areas and a control and payment system for toilet use. Large digital screens show live timetables and platform assignments, while an accessible information point, a Barcelona Turisme desk and 15 renovated ticket offices have also been added.

New security systems monitor activity inside the station and on the platforms. The council said the layout also improves links with Arc de Triomf station, where metro and Rodalies services connect, and that the works respected the building’s status as a local cultural heritage asset.
