Barcelona commuters should plan ahead this summer, as Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has confirmed a month-long closure on Metro Line 1 between Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou from 17 July to 28 August. The interruption will affect stations from Florida to Plaça de Sants.

Laia Bonet, president of TMB, and Manel Nadal, secretary of Mobility and Infrastructure for the Generalitat, set out the works, which include an €11.5 million investment to renew railway infrastructure and improve accessibility. TMB estimates around 43,000 people will be affected daily during July weekdays, falling to about 36,000 a day in August.

To help passengers travel across the city, TMB recommends using connections at Torrassa for Lines 9 and 10 South, and at Plaça de Sants for Line 5. Travellers can also connect with Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya at Avinguda Carrilet, and with Rodalies at Rambla Just Oliveras. A replacement shuttle bus will run along the affected stretch on the metro timetable. For wider service updates, see news.

Other summer works will also affect the network. Lines 9 and 10 North will close between La Sagrera and Onze de Setembre from 25 June to 30 August, before the closure extends to Bon Pastor from 31 August to 6 September. TMB says the works are needed to build a large shaft that will connect the northern sections of both lines with the central section now under development.

That section is expected to affect about 3,295 daily users in July and around 2,386 in August. Alternative routes include Line 1 at Fondo, Line 2 at Gorg, and bus services H8, 34 and 126. A replacement bus will also be available.

At Verdaguer station on Line 4, trains will continue to pass through but will not stop while accessibility works are carried out. The €8.6 million project began in October 2025 and is the first phase of adapting the interchange between Lines 4 and 5 for people with reduced mobility. TMB says Line 5 will not be affected.

Manel Nadal said 96% of Barcelona’s metro stations are already accessible. He added that, with the works at Verdaguer and Plaça de Sants, only four stations across the network still need to be adapted. TMB is also renovating the corridor between Lines 1 and 3 at Catalunya station from 6 July to 7 September, including the removal of asbestos materials that were previously out of reach of users. More official service information is available from TMB and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
