Barcelona has honoured architect and urban planner Oriol Bohigas with a commemorative plaque in the Eixample, at Carrer Casanova 71, the building where he was born. The ceremony took place on 30 May 2026 and marked the centenary of his birth.

The event was led by Jordi Valls, the Eixample councillor and deputy mayor for Economy, Housing, Finance and Tourism. Barcelona City Council said family members and figures from the architecture world also attended the unveiling.

Speakers included Guillem Costa, acting dean of the College of Architects of Catalonia (COAC), Juli Capella, commissioner for the Bohigas Year, and Elisabet Cirici, director general of Spatial Planning and Urbanism for the Catalan government. Bohigas's two daughters also addressed those present.

In his remarks, Valls described Bohigas as a reference for the city and said he led Barcelona's major transformation. He highlighted Bohigas's role in the recovery of the historic centre, the dignification of neighbourhoods and the creation of quality public spaces.

Barcelona said the tribute reflects Bohigas's lasting link with the city and the mark he left through his work at MBM and his time as a public manager at the city council. In that role, he played a decisive part in Barcelona's urban and cultural renewal.

The plaque is part of Barcelona's 2026 Architecture Capital programme, which includes events throughout the year. For more local coverage, see our news page.
