In Catalonia, the fire prevention campaign in Terra Alta and Ribera d'Ebre has started a month early after record high temperatures in May, according to Diari de Tarragona. The Special Forest Fire Prevention Groups, known as GEPIF, are already on duty.
Teams are carrying out mobile patrols and staffing fixed observation points across the territory. The aim is to spot any fire as early as possible and allow firefighting resources to respond quickly.
The early start reflects concern about the higher fire risk linked to the current weather conditions. The usual June start has been brought forward because of the heat.
Terra Alta and Ribera d'Ebre are both part of the Terres de l'Ebre area, where natural landscapes and dry summer conditions can increase wildfire risk. Residents and local authorities are being urged to stay alert during the extended high-risk period.
