Barcelona will host its second Geek Pride Day this Saturday, 23 May, in the Triangle Friki area around Arc de Triomf, with a full programme of pop culture activities for fans of manga, video games, role-playing, board games and cosplay.
The event runs from 11am to 8pm along Passeig de Sant Joan, between Arc de Triomf, Ausiàs March street and Bailèn street. Barcelona City Council says it follows a successful first edition last year.
Javier Rodríguez, the City Council’s Commissioner for Childhood, Adolescence, Youth and LGTBI Policies, will open the day at 11am. He said the event gives a collective that often feels misunderstood a chance to take centre stage, celebrate its interests and learn more about youth services.
The main stage, in front of Arc de Triomf, will host concerts, exhibitions, performances and a cosplay competition. Along Passeig de Lluís Companys, two marquees will offer workshops, board game and role-playing sessions, and video game tournaments. Shops including AfterLife, Norma Comics and Magic Barcelona will also have stands.
A Joves de Barcelona marquee will provide information about the day’s activities and about year-round geek-related activities offered by the city’s youth services. It will also offer advice on training, employment and housing. More on the city’s youth services is available on the news tag page.
The Fort Pienc Escènic friki stage programme includes a Star Wars demonstration, a presentation by the Triangle Friki Association with Bandai and Gigamesh, a Geek DJ session, K-pop, film music, urban dance, an otaku musical bingo and a nostalgic geek concert. Workshop areas will also host manga drawing, cosplay and make-up sessions, Mario Kart World tournaments, musical bingos, board games, geek karaoke and role-playing games.
The event is organised by the Department of Youth of Barcelona City Council, with collaboration from Eix Fort Pienc and participation from sector groups. Barcelona City Council is the primary source for the programme details.
