Barcelona has started work on a new water play area in the Eixample district. The facility will be on Avinguda de Mistral, between Entença and Rocafort streets.
City Council officials said the project will transform the current children's play area into a 42-square-metre space. It is designed to help residents cool down during summer. The area will feature non-slip concrete paving with a slight incline and a central drainage system for safety and comfort.
Water Features and Accessibility
The plans include various water games, such as jets, sprinklers, and dynamic structures. These are designed for children of different ages to enjoy safely. The design prioritises smooth surfaces without changes in level.
These water features will operate from June to September, during morning and afternoon slots. They will activate via push-buttons, limiting water use to a maximum of 10 cubic metres daily. This promotes efficient water consumption, according to the City Council.
Urban Planning and Investment
The project also involves reorganising urban furniture, installing approved fences during operational periods, and improving access points. These changes aim to ensure the area coexists well with other uses of the avenue and enhances safety for pedestrians and vehicles.
The new space is being built with universal accessibility standards in mind. This means people with functional diversity can use it, helping to create an inclusive and high-quality public environment.
With an investment of nearly €220,000, this new cooling area on Avinguda de Mistral will join the city's network of climate refuges. This move helps Barcelona become more resilient, healthy, and ready for climate challenges.
