Barcelona has started works to renovate Avinguda de Roma in the Eixample district, with the first phase beginning on Tuesday, 9 June. The project covers the section between Viladomat and Calàbria streets.
The scheme will create an 8,000 m² public square in front of the Estel building. It will also turn the street into a wider promenade for pedestrians, add more green space, and include new paving and urban furniture.
The €4.4 million project will extend the pedestrian promenade to València street. It will also add a single-platform service lane for emergency vehicles. The Estel building will have a 1,700 m² gym and spa in its commercial ground floor.
The works are expected to last about one year and finish in May 2027. During construction, a service lane will remain open on the north side for traffic.
The renovation follows earlier upgrades to Avinguda de Roma between Aragó and Urgell streets in 2004, and between Comte d’Urgell and Viladomat streets in 2010. The wider transformation is expected to reach Plaça dels Països Catalans.
Jordi Valls, the Eixample district councillor, said the project updates one of the district’s most important routes, making it more pleasant and sustainable while improving residents’ quality of life. For related local coverage, see Catalonia news.
