Barcelona City Council has started work on a €4.4 million project to pedestrianise a section of Avinguda Roma in the Eixample district. The works cover the stretch between Viladomat and Calàbria streets and are due to continue until spring 2027, according to the council.

The plan includes a new plaza of about 7,700 square metres in front of the Estel building. It will extend the pedestrian promenade to València street and include a single-platform service lane for emergency vehicles.

This phase will complete the reurbanisation of the first two sections of the avenue, which were carried out in 2004 and 2010. The overall design also links the avenue with Sants station.

The council says the next phases of Avinguda Roma will run towards Entença street. It already has a preliminary project for those later sections.

Jordi Valls, the Eixample district councillor, said the work updates one of the district’s most important routes, making it more pleasant and sustainable while improving residents’ quality of life.
