Girona has brought the debate over a possible return of tolls on the AP-7 motorway back into focus, although no decision has been made. The issue came up on Monday during the presentation of the RACC and Catalan Traffic Service's iRAP risk map.

The study highlighted the role of lorries in serious accidents on sections of the AP-7 in Girona. The RACC, a motoring organisation, called for the management of the AP-7 to be transferred to the Catalan government.

The iRAP risk map identified specific stretches of the motorway in Girona where the concentration of heavy goods vehicles is linked to a higher rate of severe incidents. That finding has renewed discussion among officials and motoring groups about possible ways to improve safety and traffic flow.

One option being discussed is the reintroduction of tolls, but other measures are also likely to be considered. The Catalan government has not yet set out its position on the RACC proposal for managing the motorway.
