Alt Empordà, in northern Girona, is again calling for a dedicated police region for the area. Local leaders say the request has gained urgency after a series of serious incidents, including the discovery of twelve AK-47 assault rifles and a violent crime in Figueres.

The demand has been raised repeatedly by local councils, the Comarcal Council, the Catalan Parliament and the Interior Department. They want a stronger Mossos d'Esquadra presence in the north of Girona and the creation of a Girona North police region.

Recent cases have put pressure on policing in this border area. They include the seizure of a dozen AK-47, Kalashnikov-type rifles in a vehicle on the AP-7 motorway, a violent crime in Figueres that raised questions about judicial action, and regular operations against marijuana growing and trafficking.

The region's location, on the border with France and crossed by major transport routes, makes policing more complex. L'Empordà reports that tourist pressure also adds to the challenge, with crime patterns that often go beyond a local response.

Officials backing the proposal say a dedicated police region would allow for a more tailored response to crime in Alt Empordà. They argue it would improve coordination, increase the number of Mossos officers and support specialist units dealing with drug trafficking, violent crime and other serious offences.
