Alt Empordà, in Girona province, is one of Catalonia’s lowest areas for higher education enrolment. New data from the 2024 Population and Housing Census, published by the Statistical Institute of Catalonia, Idescat, shows that 31.3% of residents aged 18 to 24 in the comarca are undertaking higher studies.

That places Alt Empordà as the third lowest among Catalan regions. Only La Selva and Baix Penedès recorded lower figures, both at 30.9%.

The census data points to clear regional differences in educational participation across Catalonia. The report does not give reasons for the gap in Alt Empordà, but it does show that young people’s access to higher education varies sharply from one area to another.

For local authorities and education planners, the figures are a useful marker of where support may be needed. They also add to the wider picture of how geography, access and local opportunities can shape post-school choices for young people across the region.
