The municipal company Aigües de Mataró, which manages water services in Mataró, has reported a net profit of €1,313,874.83 for the 2025 financial year. This figure, approved by the General Board and the May Plenary, is higher than the previous year's profit, according to company officials.
The company's turnover reached €18,952,715.20. This financial result strengthens Aigües de Mataró's investment capacity, allowing it to continue improving public services across the city. The entire profit will be reinvested into the company, funding improvements in water supply, sewerage, and the TubVerd energy network. It will also support continuous service enhancements and aid for vulnerable groups, aligning with its public service mission.
Operational Achievements in 2025
Mataró saw a return to normal hydrological conditions in 2025 after several years of drought. This allowed Aigües de Mataró to resume ordinary operations while maintaining responsible consumption levels and a high network performance, which officials said was above the average for comparable municipalities.
The company continued to advance in managing water supply, sewerage, laboratory, and energy services. Renovation works on water supply and sewerage networks took place in most city neighbourhoods. Significant projects included renovations on Camí del Mig, Ronda de Josep Tarradellas, Carrer de Galícia and its surroundings, Camí dels Caputxins, and Carrer de Burriac.
Work also continued on installing solid waste retention systems at network overflow points. One visible example for residents was the meshes installed in September at the end of the Desviament storm drain collector, in the Riera de Sant Simó. These meshes, along with those in the Riera d'Argentona, prevented 10.7 tonnes of waste from reaching the sea during the year.
Digitalisation and Energy Expansion
Another main focus for 2025 was the push for advanced digitalisation projects for water and sewerage networks. New developments were made on the Baseform platform, which analyses water operation data, with four new control points added. These improvements provide more precise data on network performance and help increase efficiency.
As part of the Fluent 2.0 project, promoted by ACCIÓ and coordinated by the Catalan Water Partnership, work continued on developing a new fault prediction model. This model will form the basis for configuring the 2026 water supply network renovation plan. Progress was also made on the 2D-1D dual urban drainage hydraulic modelling, a tool that analyses the city's response to intense rainfall and will be used to create city flood maps (MAPRI).
In the energy sector, a new TubVerd branch became operational in 2025, extending the network from the Porta Laietana roundabout to Torre Barceló in the Iveco-Renfe-Farinera sector, which it now serves. Several housing developments progressively connected to this network throughout the year.
Research and Cybersecurity Response
Aigües de Mataró is supporting an industrial doctorate to study the functioning of the city's aquifer recharge. In 2025, geological data for the study area was updated, and experimental tests were carried out in the Riera d'Argentona to deepen knowledge of the aquifer.
Mid-2025, Aigües de Mataró faced a cybersecurity incident, a ransomware attack, which temporarily affected website access, AMSA systems, and operational data. The company immediately activated response protocols and worked with the Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) to contain the attack and restore operations quickly. Following the incident, a significant investment was made to strengthen security measures.
Community Engagement and Social Commitment
In December 2024, the exhibition “Les cares de l’aigua a Mataró” (The Faces of Water in Mataró) opened, a collaboration with the Culture Service and Can Marfà, Mataró Museum. Throughout 2025, the company organised many public activities to encourage debate on sustainability, water management, and climate change. These included a talk with meteorologist Francesc Mauri, water routes around the city, and an expert debate on water management. The company also continued guided visits to the Bellavista reservoir to explain the integrated water cycle to city students.
As in previous years, Aigües de Mataró maintains its commitment to social policies, ensuring universal access to water services through its social fund, social tariff, payment facilities, and other support measures for families facing economic difficulties.
Plans for 2026
With the end of the drought, some of the city's ornamental fountains were reactivated. Throughout 2026, efforts are underway to modernise them and make them more sustainable, alongside studies to plan the gradual recovery of the remaining fountains.
Plans also include expanding the sewerage network's digitalisation by installing sensors at 41 overflow points. This will provide more accurate data on the network's status and operation. Additionally, the remote control system for water extraction, pumping, and storage points will be expanded and improved, digitalising all collection points to monitor water from the city's wells and mines more precisely. Finally, anonymous data will continue to be shared within the EDINT project, which includes Mataró City Council and Aigües de Mataró.
Renovation works on the water supply and sewerage networks are scheduled for 2026 in various streets and neighbourhoods, including Sant Joaquim, Cosme Churruca, Avinguda del Maresme, Lepant, Cerdanyola, Vista Alegre, and Cirera. With the approval of the 2025 accounts, Aigües de Mataró reaffirms its commitment to operating as a leading public company, serving the city with responsible, transparent, and future-oriented management.
