A 19-year-old was arrested in central Tarragona on Thursday after allegedly resisting Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police, during an intervention in Plaça de Corsini, outside the Mercat Central de Tarragona.
For residents, shoppers and people passing through the central square, the incident caused tension and drew a crowd while officers restrained the man. He was detained on suspicion of an offence of assaulting police officers, according to ElCaso and Diari Més.
Reports of disorder in the city centre
ElCaso reported that emergency calls were made to 112 shortly after 5.20pm after a young man was seen shouting, causing disturbances and frightening people in Carrer de Cristòfor Colom.
Several police patrols went to the area. The man was later located in Plaça de Corsini, in front of the central market, where ElCaso said he was agitated and causing a disturbance among passers-by.
Eight officers involved in restraint
When officers approached him, the man allegedly became aggressive and tried to strike them several times, ElCaso reported. Reinforcements were requested before he was restrained, handcuffed and taken to a police station.
Diari Més reported that the man had resisted police identification and that up to eight Mossos officers were needed to restrain him. The newspaper said he had a prior police record.
The emergency alert that led officers to the scene was made through 112.
