Vic Leads Regional Bioeconomy Push

The city of Vic is moving forward with plans to establish one of Catalonia’s first biopolis zones, dedicated industrial land for businesses in the bioeconomy sector, as part of its Municipal Action Plan 2024–2027. This initiative, outlined in the Vic Acció de Mandat programme, aims to attract innovative firms that add value through sustainable use of organic resources, including agricultural waste, urban biomass, and food-chain co-products. The project forms part of a broader strategy to diversify the local economy, create stable jobs, and retain skilled professionals in the Osona region.

Rooted in Regional Strategy

The push follows the 2022 launch of the Estratègia de Bioeconomia de Catalunya 2030 and its 2022–2024 Action Plan, presented at the inaugural BIT Congress (Bioeconomy, Innovation and Technology) held in Vic on 6 and 7 April 2022. That event, organised by the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Generalitat, the Vic City Council, and Fira Lleida, brought together over 60 speakers from universities, research centres, and industry to showcase successful bioeconomy models. Participants highlighted Catalonia’s technological capacity, supportive funding frameworks, and the need to empower primary and forestry sectors to supply local materials for bio-based industries.

We have talent and projects, and we must work to make them real.

Industrial Transformation Underway

The proposed biopolis zone aligns with ongoing efforts to modernise Vic’s industrial estates, including Malloles, Bruguer, and Casassas. On 8 June 2026, the local government approved the initial project (Codi expedient: 10996/2026) to improve cycling infrastructure, install secure bicycle parking, and introduce designated loading zones in these areas, upgrades intended to support greener, more efficient business operations. Further development will depend on definitive approval processes and coordination with regional bodies such as the Diputació de Barcelona and research partners including the BETA Technological Centre at the University of Vic. While no final timeline has been set, the first phase of the comarcal industrial park project is currently 89% complete in planning terms, according to the municipal action dashboard.
