Demolition Paves Way for Urban Renewal

The Ajuntament de Reus (city council) will buy and demolish two buildings at numbers 32 and 34 on Carrer de Balmes, a move approved by the Local Government Board on Friday, 13 March 2026. This action will allow the extension of Avinguda del Carrilet into the city centre, removing a long-standing urban barrier. One family has already been successfully relocated from one of the buildings; the other property was vacant. The demolition project forms part of a wider urban redevelopment plan affecting the Carrilet area, including planned upgrades to the current Carrilet Market facilities and bus station.

Creating Green Public Space

Under the General Urban Planning Scheme, the cleared land is designated as a public open space and green zone. The council plans to develop a new permeable, green urban area in line with the landscape treatment currently used along the avenue. The project also supports future expansion of the municipal underground car park beneath the Carrilet district. Design work for the site's redevelopment will incorporate planning for this increased capacity.

Mayor Hails Historic Step

With this urban operation, the council resolves a historic project and takes a step forward in completing a strategic urban axis connecting southern neighbourhoods with the city centre and key Carrilet facilities.

Sandra Guaita, mayor of Reus, described the demolition as a breakthrough in delivering a long-planned city goal. The extended avenue aims to strengthen links between the Carrilet district and central Reus, improving walkability and access.

The definitive draft of the Carrilet reorganisation plan was also approved unopposed this week, confirming the redesign of nearby Rocamora Street and transport hubs as part of the broader development vision for Reus’s southern districts.
