Former US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the US Navy would begin guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz from Monday. Trump described this as a humanitarian gesture, responding to requests from other countries whose vessels, crews, and supplies have been paralysed for weeks.
"The movement of ships has the sole purpose of freeing people, companies, and countries that have done absolutely nothing wrong. They are victims of circumstances," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He added that his representatives were holding "very positive discussions" with Iranian leaders about formally ending hostilities between the United States and Iran.
Strait Closure Impacts Global Trade
The Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway off the coast of Iran, has been closed to maritime traffic. This closure has trapped oil, fertilisers, and petrochemical products in the Persian Gulf, causing energy prices to rise worldwide. Approximately 2,000 ships have been stranded since Iran closed the strait last month, prompting the United States to announce its own blockade, creating a global standoff.
According to the International Maritime Organisation, a specialised United Nations body, over 20,000 sailors are currently trapped on ships unable to exit through the strait.
Iran Warns Against US Interference
Iran's initial reaction came via a message on X from Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament's national security commission. Azizi warned that any American interference in the new maritime regime of the Strait of Hormuz "will be considered a violation of the ceasefire."
Azizi also dismissed what he called "scenarios for transferring blame" from the United States. He insisted that the strait and the Gulf "will not be managed by Trump's delusional messages" and that it "is not a place for rhetoric."
Moving forward, the situation remains tense as both sides navigate the implications of the US Navy's intervention and the ongoing diplomatic discussions. The global energy market and the welfare of the stranded mariners depend on a swift resolution to the standoff.
