Tortosa, in the Terres de l'Ebre, can now move ahead with plans to remove the Franco-era monument standing in the middle of the Ebre River, after a court in Tarragona lifted the interim measures that had blocked the work.
The ruling from Contentious Court Number 2 in Tarragona removes the legal obstacle that had paused efforts to take down the structure. It is a significant step towards dismantling a monument that has been the focus of debate in Tortosa and across Catalonia.
For years, local authorities and historical memory groups have pushed for its removal, arguing that it is a symbol of the Franco dictatorship. Others have argued for keeping it as a historical artefact, or for reinterpreting it instead.
The decision means the Tortosa City Council can now proceed with its plans for the monument. The next stage will be for the council to set out a timeline and the practical steps needed for removal.
