Indian Consul Visits Terrassa City Hall
On 27 September 2026, Terrassa’s deputy mayor for City Projection, Joan Salvador, and councillor for Sports, Alberto Muñoz, received Aarsha Nissar Shanifa, Consul and Head of Chancery at the Consulate General of India in Barcelona, at a formal meeting at Terrassa City Hall. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and identify areas of mutual interest between the Valencian city and India, according to the city council.
Sports and Cultural Links Explored
A key point of common ground discussed was field hockey, a sport deeply rooted in both communities. In Terrassa, hockey is considered the "king of sports", home to CD Terrassa Hockey, Spain’s oldest hockey club, founded in 1910 and based at Les Pedritxes. In India, hockey is also a national passion with a strong cultural tradition. Both cities also share UNESCO recognition: Terrassa was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Film in 2017 and renewed the distinction in 2022 for its ongoing commitment to cinema and audiovisual creativity, particularly through the Terrassa Film Office and Audiovisual Park. During the meeting, officials highlighted the potential for future exchanges between their audiovisual ecosystems, building on Terrassa’s role as a meeting point for UNESCO Creative Cities of Film, which hosted delegations from cities including Potsdam, Bristol, Busan and Kathmandu in November 2024.

Future Collaborations on Peace, Yoga and Inclusion
Discussions also covered opportunities in cultural diplomacy, peace initiatives, and greater participation of Terrassa’s Indian community in civic life. One concrete proposal included Terrassa’s possible participation in International Day of Yoga events, a global initiative promoted by India and widely embraced in the city. Yoga and wellness activities already have a strong local following. The meeting reflects Terrassa’s broader international strategy, as outlined in its International Affairs blog, to build networks with global cities through projects like the EU-funded LIBECCIO and RESIST resilience initiatives, and through active engagement with UNESCO networks.
