Educational unions in Lleida and across Catalonia are threatening an indefinite strike if the Department of Education does not meet their demands for improved working conditions. This warning came after a meeting with the Catalan government ended without an agreement on Thursday, 14 May 2026.
The unions, including USTEC-STEs, Professors de Secundària, Intersindical, and CGT, started a series of strikes on Tuesday. They maintain the planned strike for today, Friday, 15 May, in Lleida and Alt Pirineu i Aran. The government is expected to send a new proposal regarding inclusive education and salaries on Monday, with both parties scheduled to meet again on Tuesday.
However, union representatives have stated they will not attend the Tuesday meeting if the new proposal is not satisfactory. Today's strike action will include a demonstration in Lleida city and La Seu d'Urgell at 12:30pm, as well as a gathering at the Cadí Tunnel in the afternoon.
Strike Action Continues
Ahead of today's action, Santa Maria de Gardeny school held an event yesterday to explain the reasons for the strike to students. Yesterday also saw strikes in Central Catalonia, including Solsonès, and Girona. The Department of Education reported a 21.52% participation rate for these strikes, while unions claimed a 55% turnout.
The ongoing dispute centres on teachers' working conditions, with unions pushing for significant improvements. The government's upcoming proposal and the subsequent meeting will be critical in determining whether further, potentially indefinite, strike action can be avoided.
