BARCELONA: A strike by teaching and administrative staff in public schools and the Education Department in Central Catalonia and Girona saw a 21.52% turnout by 5pm on Thursday, officials said.
The Generalitat's Ministry of Education and Vocational Training provided the figures. The department stated that 92.32% of the workplaces with staff called to strike had communicated their data.
The strike specifically targeted staff in Central Catalonia and Girona. This included teaching and administrative personnel from public schools, as well as employees of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training. The affected departmental staff included those in educational services, territorial and central services, among others.
However, the Education Department noted that its figures do not include all groups involved in the strike. Data was not available for staff from other institutions, cleaning personnel, kitchen staff, or monitors.
Strike Impact and Future Steps
The territorialised strike action highlights ongoing labour relations within Catalonia's education sector. While the immediate impact is localised to Central Catalonia and Girona, such actions often reflect broader concerns among education professionals across the region. Further discussions between unions and the Generalitat are expected to address the issues that led to the strike.
