Teachers in Catalonia blocked several key access points to Barcelona and other major roads in Mataró and Malla on 12 May, the first day of a planned strike. The industrial action, part of 17 strike days scheduled between 7 May and 5 June, caused considerable disruption for commuters.

The C-31 in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and a section of Barcelona's Ronda Litoral were closed from 7.12am. These closures added to three points on the Ronda de Dalt that had already been blocked, according to Europa Press.

Beyond Barcelona, demonstrators also blocked the C-32 in Mataró and the C-17 in Malla, both in the Barcelona province. The Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT) confirmed these additional road closures via a post on 'X', as reported by Europa Press.

Traffic Disruption Across the Region

The road closures led to significant traffic jams. One section of the Ronda de Dalt in Barcelona experienced queues stretching for seven kilometres, impacting thousands of drivers during the morning rush hour. The strike aims to press for improved working conditions and educational resources.

This initial day of action sets the tone for further planned strikes throughout late May and early June. Commuters and residents in affected areas should anticipate continued disruption as teachers continue their protests.
