Nine people were injured in Tàrrega on Friday morning after an accidental chemical reaction at the municipal indoor swimming pool, emergency services reported. The incident, which occurred around 10:50am during water treatment, involved the mixing of incompatible products.

Tàrrega's mayor, Rosa Maria Perelló, explained that "due to an unfortunate human error, chlorine was mixed into the hydrochloric acid tank, causing a chemical reaction and the emission of smoke." This reaction created a toxic cloud, prompting the immediate evacuation of approximately 60 users and staff from the indoor pool and gym at the Complex Piscines.

Of those affected, six sustained minor injuries. Three received treatment on site, while three others were taken to the Tàrrega Primary Care Centre (CAP). One person suffered less serious injuries, primarily from gas inhalation, and was transported to Arnau de Vilanova Hospital in Lleida. Two other individuals are awaiting assessment. Those affected reported breathing difficulties and throat irritation, and were given oxygen.

Emergency Response and Safety Measures

Gabriel Cogolludo, the territorial deputy head of the Fire Department in the Lleida Emergency Region, detailed that "an exothermic reaction occurred when chlorine was discharged into the wrong tank, which contained hydrochloric acid, generating a toxic cloud with high levels of danger." He emphasised that the priority was "the evacuation and care of affected individuals" given a "hot zone with dangerous concentrations."

The Generalitat Fire Department deployed eight units, including the specialised GRIT (Technological Incident Support Group), and continuously monitored the chemical reaction. High gas concentrations prevented access to the facility's interior for several hours.

Raül Arenas, the Sports Councillor, confirmed the evacuation of about 60 people and praised "the quick action of the lifeguard," who was among those affected, along with a maintenance worker. Arenas also thanked other Complex Piscines staff for their "good and quick action."

Ongoing Situation and Next Steps

Civil Protection activated the pre-alert phase of the PROCICAT plan for chemical contamination. The initial safety perimeter was extended to cover the entire sports area as a preventive measure. This area will remain closed until further notice.

Emergency services continue to work on site to control the situation and ensure that toxicity levels are reduced to safe values. Local Police, Mossos d'Esquadra, Generalitat Fire Department units, ambulances from the Medical Emergency System (SEM), and Tàrrega municipal brigade personnel all responded to the incident.
