Workers at the Repsol and Asesa refineries in Tarragona joined a nationwide 24-hour strike on Wednesday, 27 May, over demands for a lower retirement age in the refining sector.
The action affected production centres across Spain, including Tarragona’s two plants. Repsol’s refinery is in the northern industrial estate, while Asesa’s plant, jointly owned by Moeve, formerly Cepsa, and Repsol, is in the southern estate.
The strike was backed by major unions in the sector, including the Workers’ Union, STR, and several UGT sections. Company committees at each affected centre also supported the industrial action, according to reports.
The dispute centres on working conditions and long-term career prospects for refinery employees. Further talks between unions and industry representatives are expected to continue on the issue.
