Tarragona police fined a 28-year-old motorcyclist after stopping him in the Bonavista neighbourhood on Tuesday evening. Officers said he was riding without a helmet, had a disqualified licence and was carrying illegal drugs.

The stop took place at about 7.45pm in Carrer Vint, in Tarragona’s Ponent district. Plainclothes officers noticed the motorcycle because the driver was not wearing a helmet, although his passenger was, according to the Guàrdia Urbana.

A traffic unit then attended the scene and checked the rider’s documents. Police found that his driving licence had been withdrawn, although the official notification of that withdrawal had not yet been served to him.

Because he had not yet received that notice, officers fined him for driving while his licence was invalid, rather than opening criminal proceedings at that stage. They also formally notified him of the withdrawal at the scene, meaning any repeat offence could lead to criminal charges for a road safety offence.

He was also fined for not wearing a helmet. During a search, officers found cocaine and hashish among his belongings, which led to a further fine for possession of illegal substances.

The passenger, who was wearing a helmet, took charge of the motorcycle after the stop. The vehicle was then removed from the scene without further issues. For more local reporting, see our news coverage.
