Tarragona recorded a 40.4% rise in home burglaries in the first quarter of 2026, with cases increasing from 57 to 80, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of Interior. The figures come as the city, in Catalonia, saw an overall fall in conventional crime over the same period.
Conventional crime in Tarragona dropped by 4.4% year on year, from 2,023 cases to 1,933. Total criminal infractions also fell by 1.9%, from 2,257 to 2,215 known incidents.
Several offence categories showed clear declines. Sexual freedom offences fell by 35.3%, from 17 to 11 cases. Robberies involving violence or intimidation dropped by 10.7%, from 56 to 50, while drug trafficking offences decreased by 41.2%, from 17 to 10.
The sharpest fall was in homicides and attempted homicides, which went from four cases in the first three months of 2025 to one in the same period of 2026. At the same time, some property crimes moved in the opposite direction, including vehicle thefts, which rose by 14.3% from 35 to 40, and petty thefts, which increased by 3% from 640 to 659.
Authorities said the overall improvement in crime figures is linked to the work of different police forces and to stronger prevention, proximity and street presence policies. The Guardia Urbana of Tarragona said it will continue working to support coexistence and security across all neighbourhoods.
