Tarragona province is preparing for a weekend of severe weather, with heavy rain, storms, and a drop in temperatures expected from Friday, 8 May 2026. The instability is due to a low-pressure system west of Portugal and another forming in the Mediterranean, according to the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya.
Precipitation will focus on the southern parts of the province, particularly in the Terres de l'Ebre region, including Montsià and Baix Ebre. Baix Camp and Tarragonès will also experience significant rainfall. Showers could bring storms and isolated hail.
Saturday to see most intense weather
Saturday is forecast to be the most challenging day. The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya has issued a yellow alert for intense rain in Montsià and Baix Ebre, warning that over 20 litres per square metre could fall in 30 minutes between 14:00 and 20:00. While the alert targets the south, rain will spread across the entire province throughout much of the day, with locally intense downpours, storms, and possible hail.
On Sunday, conditions are expected to improve partially during the morning, but this stability will be temporary. Instability is predicted to increase again in the afternoon, with the possibility of locally intense storms in inland areas, especially in Terra Alta.
This weather episode is part of a broader unstable pattern across Spain. The State Meteorological Agency anticipates a weekend of showers, storms, and cooler temperatures across much of the country. This dynamic atmosphere results from the interaction between Atlantic and Mediterranean low-pressure systems.
Meteorologist Rubén del Campo explained that the situation will bring locally strong and persistent rainfall, sometimes accompanied by hail. Temperatures will also be cooler than usual for this time of year.
Looking ahead to next week, forecasts suggest unstable weather will continue, particularly in the north and west of the Iberian Peninsula. Temperatures are expected to remain below normal for mid-May, though some periods of greater stability are possible in the Mediterranean area.
