Tarragona is set for a week of unusually high temperatures, with forecasts pointing to conditions more typical of mid-summer. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, and the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, Meteocat, have both warned of the heat.
AEMET says maximum temperatures across Spain will generally be between 30C and 32C, but some valleys, including the Ebro, could reach 36C to 38C on Wednesday. In isolated areas, temperatures may rise to 40C.
Meteocat says the conditions are typical of the canícula, the warmest period of summer. Wednesday is expected to be mostly sunny, with few clouds throughout the day.
In Tarragona and inland parts of the province, minimum temperatures are expected to stay similar to previous days, or rise slightly, while daytime highs will increase sharply. Inland areas could exceed 30C, while the Prelitoral and Ponent are forecast to see 32C to 34C, with some parts of Ponent reaching 35C to 36C.
The heat comes after a very dry April in Tarragona province. Meteocat data shows April 2026 was one of the driest on record for the province between 1991 and 2020, with rainfall not exceeding 30 mm in most areas. That lack of recent rain could make the heat feel more intense.
The high temperatures are expected to continue across Spain through the week, with the Canary Islands the main exception, where temperatures are forecast to return to normal from Wednesday. For more Catalonia-wide updates, see our news coverage.
