Workers at Fundesplai are emptying holiday camps across Catalonia today as part of an ongoing strike, with the action taking place during a wider education sector stoppage. The CGT union, which is involved in talks with the Education Department, said the move affects several sites in the region.
The camps named by the union include La Rectoria de la Selva in Navès, in Solsonès, Mas Cavalies in Sant Joan de les Abadesses, in Ripollès, and La Singlera, Els Porxos and Can Mateu in Vilanova de Sau, in Osona. Also affected are the Company holiday camp, two kilometres from Vilanova de Sau, Can Massaguer in Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, in Selva, and Can Grau in Olivella, in Garraf. School groups are staying at these sites, and the unions said monitors will leave while minimum services are activated.
The CGT said the action is meant to show the role of educational leisure work and to highlight what it describes as precarious conditions in the sector. The union cited low pay, unstable working hours, heavy workloads and a lack of professional and institutional recognition.
Workers also say Fundesplai has repeatedly breached labour rules. Their complaints include not respecting the minimum 12-hour rest period between shifts, not recognising some professional categories, and not applying the availability terms set out in the collective agreement. They also point to workplace safety concerns and too little time to prepare educational activities properly.
Other issues raised include irregularities in call-up and internal promotion processes, and unpaid supplements such as night work. As a result of the strike, some holiday camps managed by Fundesplai will not operate today.
The CGT said the protest is not only about working conditions, but also about defending the educational and care model. The union said that model is currently sustained by the precariousness of professionals working in leisure companies and in the Department of Education and Vocational Training.
