In Catalonia and across Spain, the Spanish government is considering a new €200 child benefit for families with minors. According to officials, the proposed aid would not depend on family income, only on having a child under 18.
The measure is intended to help reduce extreme child poverty. The government expects that rate could fall to 8%, and estimates the policy would cost nearly €20 billion a year, specifically €19.276 billion.
The benefit could be claimed through a negative income tax declaration, although the government is still looking at other payment options. Officials have said the subsidy is not yet available, because several details still need to be finalised and the measure must be formally approved before it can take effect.
Alongside child poverty, specialists say the proposal also reflects concern about Spain’s ageing population. They argue it could support families with children, encourage higher birth rates, and help protect the long-term sustainability of the Social Security system.
