Vigo, in Galicia, saw an unexpected incident on 30 May 2026 during the annual Armed Forces Day parade, when the Spanish flag fell as it was being raised. The event was presided over by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia Ortiz, with Princess Leonor of Borbón attending her first military ceremony.
The flag fell during the traditional hoisting after the rope supporting the national ensign came loose. After the mishap, the flag was placed on a tray, and the Royal Guard's ensign was used for the rest of the parade.
Bad weather also affected the programme. Low clouds led to the cancellation of the aerial display and the parachute jump by the Air Force's patrol, and prevented fighter jets, helicopters and the Mirlo Formation from taking part. The Mirlo Formation was due to draw the Spanish flag in the sky.
Despite the setbacks, thousands of people gathered early at Samil beach to watch the parade. A total of 3,746 personnel from the three armed forces, the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the Civil Guard and the Royal Guard took part. More news from Catalonia
When the King, Queen and Princess Leonor arrived at the tribune, they were met with applause and cheers from the public. Defence Minister Margarita Robles, Xunta President Alfonso Rueda and Vigo Mayor Abel Caballero were also present.
Princess Leonor wore the gala uniform of an Air Force ensign and displayed the insignia confirming she had completed the voluntary military parachuting course. After a tribute to military personnel who died in service, the parade continued with motorised units and armoured vehicles, including the new 8x8 Dragón, which made its debut this year. The Legion and the UME received the loudest ovations, and the Legion's mascot, a ram named Baraka, also drew attention. The event closed a week of Armed Forces Day activities in Vigo.
