Spain's Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, announced on Monday that the country has an "assured" supply of jet fuel for the summer, thanks to current 90-day reserves. Speaking at an information breakfast in Madrid, Groizard stated that even if borders were hypothetically closed tomorrow, Spain could manage the summer normally.
Groizard added that the energy sector reports "normality" regarding supply and the fulfilment of existing contracts. However, he cautioned that this advantage does not mean "immunity" from a price crisis. Such a crisis could last for some time due to damage to oil infrastructure caused by the war in the Middle East.
Spain's Energy Position
The current energy situation is "unprecedented", according to Groizard, but Spain is "in a good position" for the security of its oil and natural gas supply. He described the approach as "a certain active calm, vigilant", attributing this advantage to the "anticipation" in managing suppliers.
This "secure summer" is due to both legal and historical factors, according to the Spanish government. Spain has about 17 different natural gas suppliers, a result of regulations that mandate diversification. For crude oil, refineries are "more versatile" than those in other European countries, providing "more margin" to adapt to oil from various origins. The Secretary also highlighted the significant role of renewables in electricity production.
Moving forward, the government will continue to monitor global energy markets and maintain strategic reserves to ensure stability for consumers and businesses across Catalonia and Spain.
