Santa Coloma de Farners City Council is restoring part of its historic municipal documentary collection at the Arxiu Comarcal de la Selva, the county archive, to preserve it and make it safer to consult.
The work matters to residents and researchers seeking to study the town’s past: the treatment is intended to prevent deterioration and allow archive staff and users to handle and retrieve the records under safe conditions, according to a report published by Diari de Girona on 31 July 2026.
Specialist cleaning and disinfection are being carried out on documents with historical and administrative value. The initiative is promoted by the Ajuntament de Santa Coloma de Farners, the town council, with a €6,284.31 grant from the Diputació de Girona, the provincial authority.
Records span public works, accounts and wartime correspondence
The material being treated includes records from several periods of Santa Coloma de Farners’ municipal administration:
- Public-works, infrastructure and urbanisation projects from the 1940s.
- Budgets and account books dating from 1920 to 1980.
- Population registers and municipal correspondence, particularly material produced during the Spanish Civil War and the early years of the Franco dictatorship.
Document restorers and conservators Magalí Anglada and Cristina Najar, of Sot del Rector, are carrying out the work.
Mayor and archivist visit the restoration work
Mayor Pep Prat, councillor Joan Casalprim and municipal archivist Sergi Torrent visited the Arxiu Comarcal de la Selva to follow the progress of the restoration process.
The council’s stated aim is for the documents to be handled, recovered and consulted safely once treated, supporting both archive staff and people who wish to study the municipal collection.
