A 19-year-old man was arrested in Salou, Tarragona, on Saturday, 16 May, after allegedly assaulting his pregnant partner in the street. Police were called to Carles Buïgas street around 11pm following an emergency call reporting gender violence.

Officers from the Urban Crime Group found the woman lying on the ground with clear signs of assault. Witnesses and the victim herself told police what had happened. The young woman had reportedly left a building asking for help, but the man followed her into the street and allegedly kicked her multiple times.

Emergency medical services (SEM) attended the scene and treated the victim. After an initial assessment, she was taken to a medical centre for further tests. Doctors checked her health and, critically, the well-being of her unborn baby, according to officials.

The Mossos d'Esquadra arrested the man, whose nationality has not been released. He had no previous police record. He is accused of domestic abuse as part of gender violence.

After spending two nights in police custody, the man was handed over to a judge on Monday. The judge will decide whether to issue a restraining order against him, protecting both the victim and her unborn child.
