Salou will host the 11th Challenge Salou – Costa Daurada triathlon this Sunday, 10 May, attracting over 1,200 athletes from 50 different nationalities. The event, a fixture on the European triathlon circuit, will make the Costa Daurada capital a global centre for the sport throughout the weekend.
More than 60% of participants are international, reinforcing Salou's standing as a top-tier sports destination and a leader in organising large-scale sports tourism events. This helps extend the tourist season beyond summer.
Passeig Jaume I will be the main hub for the competition. The flagship Middle Distance race requires athletes to complete a 1,900-metre swim at Llevant beach, a 90-kilometre cycle along the Salou-Tarragona motorway, and a 21-kilometre half marathon along Salou's seafront promenades. A shorter distance race, the Short Distance, will also take place, catering to both professional and amateur triathletes.
Top Athletes Compete
The Challenge Salou features a high-calibre line-up this year. In the women's category, competitors include Italy's Elisabetta Curridori, last year's Salou winner; Spain's Marta Sánchez, currently ranked second nationally and a leading figure in European triathlon; and Australia's Milan Agnew.
For the men's race, defending champion Thomas Davis will aim to retain his title against a strong field of favourites. This group includes fellow Briton Will Draper, the recent European long-distance champion, as well as international names like Joe Skipper, Harry Palmer, and Jack Hutchens.
The official presentation of the competition took place at the Hotel Blaumar. Salou's Mayor, Pere Granados, attended alongside race director Juanan Fernández, Challenge Family President Zibi Szlufcik, and Iván Álvarez, head of the parallel Stage Experience campus.
Economic Impact and Traffic Measures
Mayor Pere Granados highlighted Salou's 'firm commitment to sports tourism and major international events'. He noted that the Challenge 'projects Salou's image worldwide and generates economic activity, employment, and tourism promotion outside the summer season'. Beyond the sporting aspect, the event acts as a significant economic driver for the municipality. The more than 1,200 participants are joined by hundreds of companions, family members, and technical teams who fill Salou's hotels, restaurants, and shops for several days.
The organisers also emphasised the qualitative growth of the event, citing both the athletic level and the strengthened organisational and logistical support deployed this year.
An special traffic operation will be active this Sunday between 6am and 2pm due to the Challenge Salou – Costa Daurada. This operation, coordinated by the organisers, the Catalan Traffic Service, the Mossos d'Esquadra, and Salou Local Police, aims to ensure participant safety and minimise disruption to mobility. The organisers advise planning journeys in advance and following directions from security forces and auxiliary staff throughout the day.
Separately, Mayor Pere Granados attended the Salou Aquatló awards ceremony on Saturday afternoon. This event, held in the Challenge Salou area, was organised by Challenge Salou and Club Salou Triatló, with support from Salou City Council and supervision by the Catalan Triathlon Federation (FCT).
