Emergency services in Girona will carry out a final aerial search along the coast from Roses to Begur on Saturday morning before suspending efforts to find a 16-year-old boy who disappeared on a jet ski on Wednesday night.
The teenager was part of a guided tour when he went missing. The company raised the alarm at about 10.45pm after he did not return with the group to Santa Margarida beach in Roses. Local police in Pals later found the overturned jet ski on Thursday on a beach near Begur.
Firefighters are working on the theory that the young man lost his life jacket at some point and may have sunk, according to officials. Ground teams have searched the coastline between L'Escala and L'Estartit, and drones were also deployed to the Medes Islands area.
Jordi Marquès, the head of the intervention, said on Friday afternoon that sea currents change constantly. He added that authorities cannot rule out the possibility that the currents carried the boy north, contrary to the direction the jet ski travelled.
This search has involved ground, sea and air teams, and earlier reports said it was expanded to include Torroella de Montgrí by land, sea and air. For more Catalonia news updates, see our news page.
Following Saturday's helicopter sweep, the operation is expected to be suspended. Emergency services would reassess the search if any new information or developments come to light.
