Reus, Catalonia, will host mobile information and self-service compost points from 4 to 8 May as part of International Compost Week. The initiative, organised by Reus City Council's mobile recycling centre in collaboration with the Waste Agency of Catalonia, seeks to raise awareness about the benefits of composting.
Daniel Rubio, Councillor for Environment, Sustainability and Public Roads, highlighted the positive environmental impact of everyday actions like correctly separating organic waste and composting. He stated that transforming waste into a useful resource helps the city move towards greater sustainability and a circular economy. The points will operate from 10am to 1.30pm and 4.30pm to 7pm.
Visitors can learn about the composting process and take home a small container of compost. This allows them to see first-hand the final product created from organic matter. Environmental information staff will be participants from the 'Promotion of energy saving and domestic waste management' work experience plan, part of the 'Work in the Neighbourhoods 2025' programme, driven by IMFE Mas Carandell.
Promoting Sustainable Practices
This action receives funding from the Public Employment Service of Catalonia and co-funding from the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, through the State Public Employment Service, within the framework of the 'Work in the Neighbourhoods' project. The mobile points will be located at:
- 4 May: Roger de Belfort street with Doctor Vila-seca avenue
- 6 May: Plaça del Comte de Reus with Sardana street
- 7 May: Jaume I avenue (in front of Mercat del Carrilet)
Compost: Feeding the Earth
The theme for this year's International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW 2026) is “Compost! Feed the Earth that Feeds Us”. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems, combating soil degradation, and preserving biodiversity. Compost is an essential tool for improving soil quality, supporting the natural cycle of organic matter, and contributing to more sustainable food production.
