Green cities awards ceremony comes to Reus

Reus will host the 15th edition of the Viles Florides Gala this Friday, 2 October 2026, from 5:45pm at the Higini Anglès Auditorium in the Diputació de Tarragona’s Conservatory of Music on Carrer de Llovera 15. The event will recognise up to 177 municipalities across Catalonia and Andorra for their commitment to urban greening, naturalisation of public spaces, and sustainable practices. The awards are granted under the Viles Florides initiative, coordinated by the Confederació d’Horticultura Ornamental de Catalunya, which evaluates towns on criteria including water management, biodiversity, heritage conservation, and citizen participation.

Reus celebrates green city strategy

Reus was selected as host city in recognition of its ongoing 'Green City' strategy outlined in its Municipal Action Plan 2023–2027, which prioritises urban renaturalisation, increased green spaces, climate adaptation, and improved biodiversity. The city has retained its maximum rating of four Flors d’Honor for the past several years, the highest distinction awarded under the scheme.

Acollir el certamen Viles Florides ens fa sentir orgullosos i reforça el compromís de Reus amb un model de ciutat més verda, sostenible i saludable.

Daniel Marcos, Reus city councillor for Public Roads, said: "Hosting the Viles Florides awards makes us proud and reinforces Reus’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable and healthier city model. We continue working to expand natural spaces and promote urban biodiversity. The Green City strategy is also a tool to improve public health, combat climate change effects, and ensure a better quality of life for all citizens."

Regional leaders to attend

The ceremony will be attended by Òscar Ordeig, Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, Reus mayor Sandra Guaita, and representatives from the Associació Catalana de Municipis, the Federació de Municipis de Catalunya, and mayors and councillors from the awarded towns. The awards will be presented in five tiers, five, four, three, two, and one Flors d’Honor, based on each municipality’s performance in promoting urban greenery, gardening, and sustainable practices. Special distinctions will also acknowledge initiatives that stood out over the past year in areas such as water efficiency, green heritage recovery, environmental adaptation, and community involvement. This year’s gala coincides with the Year Gaudí, highlighting the connection between landscape design and urban well-being.
