Salut Sant Joan Reus-Baix Camp plans to repair roofs at Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus to prevent further water leaks and repair installations affected by them. For patients, relatives and staff, the work is intended to reduce disruption in corridors, outpatient areas and emergency services during heavy rain.

The public-law body, part of the Generalitat’s Department of Health, includes the Reus hospital within its organisation. It is assessing two bids for the refurbishment contract, according to the project information.

Leaks have affected outpatient and emergency areas

Leaks have been particularly visible on the ground floor, where outpatient clinics and the public service area are located, and on basement level -1, which contains the emergency department, the museum space, delivery room and intensive care unit.

When water enters the building, blankets and towels have been placed on the floor to absorb it. Wet areas have also been cordoned off at times to reduce the risk of people slipping while moving through the hospital.

Works would be divided into localised areas

Once work begins, the maximum completion period is six months. Contractors would first clean and remove coverings to assess the waterproofing and determine the precise scale of each repair.

  • The waterproofing would be tested through flooding and watertightness checks before the intervention is signed off.
  • Water, electrical and lighting installations, telecommunications infrastructure, and ventilation and air-conditioning systems affected by leaks would then be repaired.
  • Rooms, bathrooms, consulting rooms and communal areas are included, alongside replacement of damaged joinery and flooring.

Work areas would be separated so that contractors operate only in the affected locations, limiting interference with patient movement and daily hospital activity. The contractor must control noise, disorder and dirt, while Salut Sant Joan Reus-Baix Camp may order work to stop temporarily if it considers hospital routines could be affected.

The tender had a base budget of €401,942.44 including VAT. Residents and patients can consult Salut Sant Joan Reus-Baix Camp for the organisation’s hospital contact details.
