Resignation Marks End of Nine-Year Tenure

Òscar Subirats has formally resigned as a councillor at Reus City Council (Ajuntament de Reus) this Friday, 18 September 2026, concluding nearly nine years of public service in the city. His resignation marks a transition to a full-time role as managing director of Gesat, the municipal healthcare company in Tortosa responsible for managing the Hospital de la Santa Creu de Jesús and Clínica Terres de l’Ebre. Subirats first joined the city government in May 2016 as an area advisor and was appointed councillor for Health and Citizenship in 2019, a role he held until 2023. After his party, the republicans, won five council seats in the latest municipal elections and he was sixth on the list, he initially left the council chamber. However, he returned following the impending resignation of councillor Carles Prats, taking on the portfolio for Enterprise, Training, and Employment.

Leadership Across Municipal Health Bodies

During his tenure, Subirats served as president of the governing boards of several municipal entities, including the Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus, Centre Mèdic Quirúrgic, Gestió Comarcal Hospitalària, LRCTITE, Fundació Sagessa Salut, FUNRED, Fundació per l’Atenció Social, and Sagessa. He described his time in office as being 'at the service of the city', highlighting achievements such as pandemic management, the transfer of governance of the Hospital Universitari Sant Joan to CatSalut, the reopening of the Gaudí neighbourhood dispensary, plans for the expansion of the CAP Sant Pere, and securing funding for the Escola dels Oficis. In his final council speech, Subirats thanked his family, municipal technical staff, and workers across the organisations he led. He also expressed gratitude to fellow councillors across party lines, saying:

"I hope I have been accessible enough, despite our disagreements and differences."

Successor and Final Message

He wished Meritxell Barberà success as his successor, who will take office at the next council plenary in October. Subirats praised incoming mayor Daniel Recasens, calling him the best Reus will have had since Evarist Fàbregas, mayor during the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic. His final message to fellow party members was a call to stay the course:

"Do not stray from the path we have set, and continue working for the happiness of the people of Reus. As Pericles said, 'There is no happiness without freedom, nor freedom without courage.'"
