Reus, in Tarragona province, has strengthened its water self-sufficiency after Aigües de Reus restored ten wells and water mines across the municipality. The aim is to reduce dependence on external water sources, including water from the Ebro river, according to officials.

The plan includes new boreholes for drinking water and systems to reuse groundwater for irrigation, street cleaning and industrial activities. It is part of a wider effort to diversify supply as drought episodes become more frequent in Catalonia.

Aigües de Reus has been working on the project for several years. The goal is to give residents and businesses a more stable and reliable water supply, especially during dry periods that have become a growing concern for many Catalan municipalities.

The recovered sources are expected to be integrated further into the city’s water network over time. Future decisions will focus on expanding these capabilities and improving water management so Reus can rely more on local resources.
