Portbou, in Girona province and the Empordà region, recorded its highest ever minimum temperature for May overnight on Wednesday, according to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia. The town did not fall below 28 degrees Celsius after sunset, following a day when temperatures rose above 30 degrees Celsius.
The figure is the highest minimum temperature ever registered in Portbou for the month of May. It beats the previous record at the station, set in 2001, by more than 1 degree Celsius, when the late-May minimum reached 26.8 degrees Celsius.
This is the first significant heat record reported in Catalonia since the start of an unusual spell of high temperatures this spring. Meteorologists say the record comes at the beginning of what models suggest could be one of the warmest days of this episode across the region.
The heatwave has brought abnormally high temperatures to Catalonia, and officials are monitoring the situation as the episode continues. Further warm conditions are expected.
