Barcelona’s Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys will host a major prayer vigil led by Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday, 9 June, with organisers expecting about 40,000 people. It is set to be the largest gathering of his visit to Catalonia, according to the official agenda.

The vigil is not a traditional mass. It is due to begin at 6pm, with stadium gates opening several hours earlier for staggered entry. Organisers say the event is designed as a meeting with young people, faithful and attendees from across Spain.

An early afternoon programme will include music, interviews, videos and talks. Sergio Dalma is among the confirmed performers, alongside the Escolanía de Montserrat, according to event coordinators. More than 50 confession points will also be available inside the stadium before the main prayer begins.

Pope Leo XIV is expected to arrive in the Popemobile between about 7.30pm and 8pm, then complete a circuit of the inner track before going to the main stage. Once there, he is scheduled to lead a more participatory vigil, with questions from young people and readings from the Gospel.

The stage design will include references to Antoni Gaudí’s work and religious symbols linked to Catalonia, including the Sagrada Família and the Virgin of Montserrat. The visit will also coincide with the opening of Gaudí Year.

Tickets sold out within minutes, according to the Alça la Mirada website. Organisers have said no screens will be placed outside the stadium because of security concerns, although possible locations such as Plaça de Glòries and Plaça de Catalunya have been mentioned.
