Barcelona firefighters put out a fire this afternoon at the Wikihousing building at 65 Blasco de Garay Street in Poble-sec. Municipal sources said no one was injured.
Several fire brigade units and the Guàrdia Urbana attended the scene to bring the blaze under control. Images shared by a local resident showed smoke visible from higher terraces in the area.
Poble-sec is one of Barcelona’s central neighbourhoods, and the incident was dealt with by city emergency services on site. For more Barcelona local news, see our news coverage.
This fire comes after a run of other incidents in Barcelona in recent months. On 21 May, a flat fire in El Raval severely damaged three homes. Days earlier, on 12 May, a butane gas cylinder explosion caused a fire in a residential building in Poblenou, injuring 11 people and displacing several families.
April also saw four fires in 10 days. On 22 April, a 92-year-old man died in a fire at his flat on Gran Via. A gas leak in El Carmel on 17 April left several residents without supplies for hours. On 13 April, a fire broke out in Sant Bernat passage, El Raval, and on 12 April, another fire burned the rooftop of the Hotel Pulitzer on Bergara Street.
