Girona was the setting for Pedro Sánchez’s latest political message, as the Spanish prime minister said he wants time for his government’s reforms to take root and plans to stay in office until 2027 and beyond if voters want it.
He made the comments at the closing of the Socialist Youth congress in Girona, saying: “We do not deny the problems, but the results sheet cannot be denied.” He added: “We have been moving forward for eight years despite the difficulties and problems. We will continue to maintain our roadmap to keep advancing until 2027 and beyond, as long as the Spanish people want it.”
Sánchez also criticised the opposition, describing them as “deceitful” for “mixing one thing with another to try and bring down the government with their bad practices.”
The prime minister’s remarks come as his government faces economic pressures and political disagreements. He said he remains confident in the progress made and in the direction his administration is taking.
The comments point to a longer-term strategy from Sánchez and his party, with the focus now on showing voters the effects of government policy over the coming years. For more Catalonia-wide political coverage, see our news page.
