Fire crews in Girona are still working to extinguish a fire at a waste treatment plant in Pedret i Marzà, after the Generalitat Fire Service received an alert on 3 June at 18:58 about a blaze in a pile of waste.

Two crews are still on site, soaking and moving the waste. Firefighters say the operation will take a long time because flames and hot spots can remain active deep inside compacted refuse.

Nine Generalitat Fire Service crews were first sent to the incident on Tuesday evening. The fire was visible from several nearby municipalities, including Siurana and Peralada.

The cause of the fire has not yet been reported. Waste fires can keep smouldering after the visible flames are out, so crews need to keep dousing and turning over the material to stop it reigniting.
